Scenes from a weekend

BabyBond: A Nursing Mom’s Dream (Review & GIVEAWAY!!) NOW CLOSED!

With both of my girls, I was able to breastfeed them for the first full year of their lives.  I was happy to do this and was thankful I was able to (and didn’t have the added expense of formula, etc).  With Miss M, I never breastfed her in public.  She was an October baby so we spent the greater part of that winter indoors anyway.  If we were out, I would feed her in the car or just wait until we reached our destination.  I would always go into another room if we were not at home.  As a new mom, I was most comfortable nursing her this way and it worked fine.

When C arrived, I did not have the same luxury of staying indoors as I did with M.  Now I had a 4 1/2 year old and it was summertime.  My sister-in-law had bought me a nursing cover and I used that anytime we were at the park, etc. and C was hungry.  I don’t remember there even being nursing covers when M was a baby.  The cover was okay.  C would get hot under it and sometimes bat at it instead of concentrating on eating.  I was glad I had it but wasn’t completely satisfied using it.

When I was given the opportunity to review BabyBond, I jumped at the chance.  It is a nursing cover, but one that doesn’t cover the baby!  What a great idea!  Even though my nursing days are very much behind me, I still wanted to see how the BabyBond would work.  I even had a worthwhile accomplice to help me in my review, my niece Caley.  She just became a new mom to a ten pound baby girl, “J”,  a little over a month ago!

Here is her review of the Flex cover:

I think it is a really great concept. The thing that I like best about it is that the baby is not covered and you can have eye contact with the baby but you still are covered. The fabric is nice and soft compared to some of the other nursing covers I have seen, and it is smaller then most nursing covers so it would be easy to take with you all the time without having to worry about space. The detachable burp cloth is also really nice because it attaches and when you are out you won’t have to worry about dropping the burp cloth or anything like that. The only things I find negative would be that when you are getting baby to latch on it is less modest. Also you need to be sure you are wearing a nursing shirt for it to work or else your stomach will be exposed. I would definitely try it out, probably more in the house when I don’t want to be around people then in public because of the fact that I wouldn’t want the extra expense of buying a whole nursing wardrobe to be able to use this.

One thing that I would add to Caley’s review is that if you have shirts that will button open or a low v-neck, then you do not have to use a nursing shirt with it.  Overall, I really wish I had known about BabyBond a couple of years ago, but I am glad that it is a real option for those moms that have to be on the go and those babies that hate being covered up.

Back to School / Teething Bites

After a full week off of school for spring break, Miss M. was back in the trenches today.  She woke up kinda groggy and complaining of a headache.  I swear the minute the girl wakes up, she runs out of bed.  Hence the headache and looking like she just ran into a wall.  She told daddy that she was excited to go back to school and I think she enjoys it once she is there, but she told me she didn’t really want to go.  I think the reason for her hesitation is because of what we did on Spring Break.

What did we do?  Absolutely NOTHING.  Miss M was quite content watching her Three’s Company when it was on.  We also had some good friends visit us one day for a play date, it was J’s birthday another day, we had a visit from the awesome Aunt Mimi yet another day and for the life of me I can’t remember what we did the last two days of the week.  All I know is that it was cold and definitely not feeling like spring.  Also, we had another thing going on…

2 year molars.  Beginning on Friday, C started to drool like the River Nile.  I have never seen so much spit come out of one child.  She has been having a runny nose since the time she was born.  (It honestly seems like it..hence the name of the blog).  But it had started to be more clear and hence another indication that fun was about to begin.  C has a very different pain tolerance than Miss M.  Meaning it is pretty much non existent.  So when she awoke from her afternoon nap on Saturday feeling warm we knew that the party was here.  The whining, always wants to be held, not wanting to eat party, that is.

We have been giving her tylenol and that has really helped.  I found some of her old teething toys today too and she has been chomping on them.  The problem with the two year molars is their location.  They are kinda far back for her really to be able to chomp on something to soothe them.  Any suggestions?

So that is what we have been up to.  We did have some 60 degree weather on the weekend but it is Chicago…it could still snow.  {shudder}

How was your Spring Break?  Please don’t reply if you went on some awesome trip or did anything that could cause feelings of jealousy, anger, etc.  (just kidding..)

Someday I will feel pretty again…

are the words I said to my husband a couple of nights ago before I went to bed.  This week has been a long one.  First Miss M had pink eye plus a hacking cough that makes her sound like she smokes a pack a day.  Then C has a runny nose that is like a non stop faucet and screams every time you even go for a kleenex to wipe her face.  Finally after Miss M’s pink eye was all better, guess who got it next?  Yep, the queen.  Whippee!  I was being so extra careful in washing my hands, even to the point of being OCD and then, when her eyes seemed to be getting better…Wham!  It got me.  Of course, I have been fighting a cold the entire month of March it seems.  So it was a probably a combination of factors.  I tried to use M’s eye drops for the evening to see if it would help.  My eye was so swollen and red the following morning I worried that I had actually made it worse!  I hadn’t, but it motivated me enough to go to the doctor to get my own drops.  When I compared the two drops, mine had 10% compared to M’s 3% solution.  No wonder it didn’t make any difference.

So there I was applying my eye drops, putting on the Vicks Vapor Rub and not feeling so pretty.  Oh well. Hope springs eternal and so our good health will return…soon…I hope?

For your Friday viewing pleasure and to start the weekend on a happy note…the musical stylings of M & C!

Sick Day

Last night, M started to complain about her left eye hurting her.  I went to check and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary so I told her to put a wet washcloth on it to see if that would help.  Well, a half an hour later it was still bugging her.  I went to check again and saw puss in her eye.  Sure enough she had the tell tale sign of pink eye.  Yuck.  I was lucky enough to get her into our doctor and get the prescription for eye drops.  I was able to get a couple drops in each eye last night and a couple more in her this morning.  Side note: to get eye drops into your little ones eyes quickly and painlessly, have them lay on their back with their eyes closed.  With their eyes close, administer the drops into the corner of each eye.  Then have them blink several times.  This works every time and a tip I learned from fellow parents.

So today is a sick day.  We are a runny noses, sleepy, generally crabby bunch of girls.  Yep, M, C and even I all have colds.  I thought I would post the following video to cheer us up and hopefully put a smile on your face.  It was taken using Photo Booth last Friday night when the girls were home alone with daddy.
While the cat’s away, the mice will play…

Luck of the Irish?

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, our weather has FINALLY taken a turn for the better in Chicagoland.  Hooray!  You can just feel a lift to everyone’s spirits.  I opened my windows and turned off the heat for the first time since the start of winter.  It just felt so good!!

Yesterday after C’s nap, I decided to take her outside to enjoy the nice weather.  Miss M stayed inside because 1). It was her “TV time” and you don’t mess with her time to watch Three’s Company! and 2). She had stayed home from school with a bad cough/not feeling very good.  At this point in the day she was starting to feel much better but I didn’t want to push her.

So there we were, Miss C and I, and the great outdoors, not really.  She first wanted to go play in our sand box in the back yard.  She plays so nicely in there and doesn’t eat the sand or throw it.  She played there for a good 10 minutes or so.  After that she wanted to walk around the neighborhood.  Since M was still inside, I told C we could only walk up and down our block.  That little thing walked up and down the sidewalk at least 4 times!

Here’s some pictures from our walk:

She’s “flying!”

Worked up quite the thirst!

Hopefully this luck of the Irish won’t turn folly and it will start snowing soon….This is the time of the year I truly hate the Midwest.  But I digress.  Yesterday was lovely and here’s to more days like it!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Sacrifice

Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent.  Every year I say I am going to cut back or give up something for Lent and every year I end up not following through.  This year is different.  This year I have a six year that is attending Religious Education classes every week.  This year she is the most aware of Lent and what it means to sacrifice.  This year I must follow through.
On Tuesday I noticed that my good friend, Mike, had posted on Facebook, twitter and tumblr that he was giving up all of these social media outlets for Lent.  I belong to all three of these outlets as well.  As I read his post, I thought to myself that he was on to something here.  I could do that too.  In fact, I need to do it.
Ever since we got our laptop (which means that our computer is no longer in the cold basement), I have become compulsive on checking facebook, twitter, you name it.  This is not good.  Even if it is just for a minute or two it is taking me away from giving my attention to my girls.  Why should I be giving so much of my time to an inanimate object that will always be there?  My girls, on the other hand, will not always be 6 and 1.  My habit needed to change.
It is now Friday.  I am three days into my chosen lenten offering, 21st century style.  I have not checked any of the before mentioned social sites even once.  To tell you the truth, I do not miss it.
After Easter I will be sure to give you an update on whether or not I was able to keep it up.  I am confident I will succeed.  If I don’t, I will have to answer to the 6 year old and who wants to do that?!

Thanks Mike for the inspiration and motivation!

Friday Laugh

A couple of days ago, the girls, as usual, had gone up to Miss M’s room after lunch.  They miss each other after M has been at school all morning so I just let them be.  At some point M usually calls for me to get Little C out of her room so that she (M) can have some “alone time.”  In other words, M has grown tired of little sister touching her stuff.

Well, on this particular day the girls were playing a little too long with no one calling for me, so I went to check.  When I came upon Miss M’s room, I first noticed the door was closed.  Then I opened the door and this is what I saw:
You never know what you are going to find behind closed doors around here.
